Edna Lewis was born in 1916 in Freetown, Virginia, a farming community founded after the Civil War by formerly enslaved people, her grandfather among them. Over the course of her life, Miss Lewis (as she was always known) was awarded nearly every culinary honor possible and made the case for black Southern cooking as the foundation for our national cuisine. Part memoir, part cookbook: Miss Lewis tenderly walks us through cooking with the seasons and encourages us to savor the particular delight of cooking close to the land.
