Take a Breath, Take a Sip

Cocktail recipes from our friends at Eda Rhyne Distilling Co.

From the destruction of Hurricane Helene to the end of a long election season, it’s been an eventful fall that keeps hitting us with stressful moments at every turn. In an effort to find a moment of relaxation and escape, we asked our friends at Asheville distillery Eda Rhyne to mix up a few cocktails for us.

Eda Rhyne Distilling Co. mines the flavors of regional medicinals to craft unique interpretations of traditional herbal liquors and other fine spirits—like their Appalachian Fernet and Amaro Oscura—and use folk knowledge passed down for generations to capture a terroir that honors the land and the people of Southern Appalachia.

Using Eda Rhyne’s small batch spirits and our new Mescola Cocktail Set, they crafted the Garibaldi and the Nocino Flip to invite us to take a sip (or two, or three) and a deep breath.

Garibaldi

On a window sill sits a tall ribbed glass with a yellow cocktail, a bottle named 'bitter tooth' and a stainless steel cocktail shaker.

Ingredients:
1.5 oz Bitter Tooth
4-6 oz Orange juice

Preparation:
Shake with ice until well mixed and then strain into glass over fresh ice.
Finish with an orange garnish.

The Nocino Flip

A bottle of liquor sits next to a martini glass filled with a cocktail, and a bitty bowl in the front.

Ingredients:
1 oz Nocino
.5 oz Sweet Vermouth
.25 oz Oscura
.25 oz Appalachian Fernet
.25 oz Honey
3 Shakes of Anise Bitters

Preparation:
Combine all ingredients into a cocktail shaker and dry shake without ice for at least 10 seconds.
Add ice and continue shaking until chilled and strain into coupe glass.

The flood waters of Helene devastated Eda Rhyne’s distillery on the edge of Biltmore Village. They lost vast amounts of aging spirits, bottled spirits, raw materials, production and administrative equipment and their entire tasting room bar.

Clean up and recovery efforts are ongoing as Eda Rhyne works towards reopening their tasting room for bottle sales and service before the holidays. The loss is incalculable, but they’re determined to keep sharing their unique regional flavors with the world.

A distillery with barrels and equipment knocked over and debris on the floor.

Eda Rhyne has set up a GoFundMe to support their Asheville-based staff while they work towards getting facilities back up and running. Please consider donating or grabbing a few bottles of Eda Rhyne spirits to gift this season. You can still purchase Eda Rhyne spirits through the ABC in NC, and at their Weaverville location, Eda’s Hide-a-Way.
