Introducing, Cosmos

A special, limited glaze joins our seasonal collection

Cosmos is a glaze born of alchemy, a deep, celestial blue, dappled with wisps of white, like stars scattered across an infinite night sky. Its surface shimmers with subtle variations, where layers of translucent glaze and reactive oxides come alive in the kiln’s heat.

During firing, the glaze flows and pools, creating unpredictable speckles and halos that dance with movement from materials like oxides and feldspar. The end result is a piece that feels both ancient and otherworldly.

Our current seasonal collection—In the Pines, Wine Dark Sea, and Big Sky—echoes elements in nature, and we wanted to experiment with a glaze that would reflect space and the vastness of the universe. We wanted this glaze to stand apart from our usual semi-matte colors and we wanted to experiment with a reactive glaze, similar to what we made with Ash Glaze in the late summer of 2023 but with more depth in color.

“Cosmos is a reactive glaze, which is a double-dip process…it takes significantly more work to produce than our core lineup of glaze colors. You start by dipping the pot in an underglaze. Then you dip it into water to rehydrate the glaze before glazing it again. There’s quite a bit more time spent hand-finishing each pot.”

Because it’s a double-dip glaze process, Cosmos takes double the time and labor. Applying multiple layers of glaze can amplify the dappled effects. For instance, a base glaze may react with a top coat to create contrasting or complementary patches, and transparent glazes allow the underlying reactions to show through. Additives like silica sand, grog, or other inclusions can create surface texture that influences how glaze pools or breaks, enhancing the dappled effect.

But in the end, Cosmos isn’t just a glaze. It’s an invitation to hold a fragment of the stars in your hands.
