Function and Beauty

Designing Our Plates

We wanted a plate that was equally beautiful and functional, so we fussed over all the details: the width of the rim, the angle of the slope, how it stacks, how it fits in the dishwasher, even what happens to your sauce on the walk from kitchen to table.

Before landing on this shape, we made prototype after prototype and took them all home for dinner.

The Questions We Asked

The Questions We Asked

Could you carry a saucy plate from the kitchen without sloshing? Cut into a pork chop without your knife running into the rim? How does it stack in a dishwasher?

Just Enough Lip

Just Enough Lip

The generous and full rim was designed to frame food beautifully, but also to be durable from chipping with everyday use.

Same Plate, Three Sizes

Same Plate, Three Sizes

Dinner Plate, Side Plate, Cake Plate: same shape, different amounts of real estate. One for meat-and-three, one for sandwiches and smaller suppers, and one for cake, toast, maybe a handful of olives.

Which Size Is Right for You?

Each size has a slight upward lip for spill-proof serving and easy stacking, and a plump bare clay rim to frame your masterpiece.

The Dinner plate weighs 1.625 lb, the Side Plate weighs 1.25 lbs, and the Cake Plate weighs 0.6 lbs.

At 10½-inch diameter, the Dinner Plate is our go-to for full meals. We call it the “Dinner Plate” but it is, of course, on duty around the clock. The ½ -inch diameter Side Plate is a versatile everyday size for lunches, smaller meals, sandwiches and sides, while the
6½ -inch Cake Plate is handy for snacks, desserts, bread and all the little things in between.

The Coupe is the union of a single plate and a bowl. It’s higher, rounded sides make it the perfect vessel for plating saucier meals. Plates have a flatter, more open surface, making them our preference for meals that may require using a knife. You can use both interchangeably, but a good rule of thumb is to think: coupes for pasta, plates for steak.

Yes. East Fork pottery is dishwasher-safe and microwave-safe. Our pottery is designed to fit in most standard home dishwashers and is durable enough for commercial dishwashers, too. You can read more about how to care for our pottery here.

All East Fork pottery is made at our factory in Asheville, North Carolina, using a blend of stoneware clays and minerals sourced from the American Southeast. Our team combines skilled handwork with specialized pottery equipment to shape, finish, and glaze each piece. We then fire our pottery in gas kilns using a reduction process that brings out signature iron speckles and natural glaze variations.

East Fork’s core colors make up our year-round palette. Seasonal colors come and go with the seasons, while limited colors are produced in smaller one-time runs or for special releases. Start with core colors to build your collection over time, or mix in seasonal and limited colors as they catch your eye.

We’ve brought retired colors back before, but a past return doesn’t guarantee a future one. If you have a favorite, keep an eye out for our Seconds Sales where hard-to-find colors may surface, and follow our email announcements and Instagram for re-releases.

Yes, East Fork dinnerware is oven-safe up to 350°F when heated gradually. Start with room-temperature pottery in a cool oven and let them warm up together. Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as moving pottery directly from the refrigerator into the oven or placing a hot piece in cold water. Let pottery cool before washing or refrigerating, never use it under the broiler, and check for chips or cracks before putting it in the oven.
